Gotta jump in here - had a discussion with a programmer last night who
thinks he should be making 80K+ (US) because he's seen jobs advertised in
the New York market at that rate.

It all boils down to regions.
If you're in New York or San Fran - working for a well known studio chances
are (and are worth the money) then chances are you will see salaries $40,
$60+ per hour.

However, if you happen to be out of the major centres then you shouldn't be
expecting to make the same money. Even though we live in a global village,
chances are you are working on local projects with the local economy.

In Toronto for example, there is a very different calibre of work produced
within the city and clients that go to the large agencies expect to be
paying top dollar for that work (whether it's worth it or not). Go an hour
outside of the city and what clients are willing to pay drops considerably.

Also, Toronto agencies can't charge the same fees as New York or LA based
shops - for the same reason. When looking at salaries take into account
client base, location and quality of the work. Also, if your in design image
and ink are everything - press, awards and position in the industry.

One last note - I think most people who work in the industry could make more
money in other fields. Programmers on large software projects can make
considerably more than programming CGI scripts for web sites. Animators
working for major studios will make more than Flash animators - the industry
isn't mature yet, and because the tools are so accessible many employers
think one Flash guru is the same as the next - this will change as more and
more clients are demanding better quality.

When all things considered - I love what I do.
As long as I can make a decent living, dealing with as little corporate
bullshit as possible - then I'm happy. Hell, designing interactive games and
animations sure beats working for a living... ;-)

Cheers,

Bryan
