I thinks its mainly marketspeak, we have a PacBell ADSL 'modem' (their term)
which is actually a router, cable up here anyway they call it a 'cable
modem', which consists of an actual modem (analog) for upload and a cable
router, but they call the whole thing a 'cable modem'. Most new cable
services are using two way cable 'modems' which as you said, are not modems
at all.
But then, everyone knows that a 'modem' is how you 'log-on' to the 'Web',
but a 'router' doesn't sound like a nice thing to have on your desk at
all...;-)
