There are a couple different utilities that allow you to preserve the comments in the GetInfo field when rebuilding your desktop; check out the latest version of the Norton Utilities (http://www.symantec.com/nu/nu_mac/) for one example.  TechTool Pro by Micromat (http://www.micromat.com/) is another, but the folks on MacFixit (http://www.macfixit) have reported some problems still to be resolved.
