I think calling rocks.
I put all the scripts I want to use in multiple
movie clips in the main timeline. That way
they are accessible by anyone very simply.
All you have to do is use a slash colon (/:)
when calling the frame. What the /: tells "says"
is "go up to the main timeline!"
For example, you are in a movie clip that is in
a movie clip. On the main timeline you have an
actionscript in a frame labeled addScore
in your call action you would put
/:addScore
So far I haven't encountered any pathing issues but
i have not tested it extensively with levels.
