OK, First of let me explain that I realize that this post may just get me
hanged but here goes anyway:

While I never have and never will think that anyone could develop anything
for Flash that MM couldn't do better but there are two reasons why I will
not give up on our version of a sniffer. First with this many people
working on it (48 at last count but it must be more than that by now) we
will be able to adapt to new changes to browsers and newly found
incompatibilities faster (with people not having to wait for anyone to
developed a package that has enough functionality to be marketable).
Whenever there is a new feature added, no matter how small, it will be
available immediately.

The second reason is the one I may get hanged for. While you will have no
arguments from me about how great Flash is, often due to reasons beyond our
control, it is not available for us to use. Once we have a fully working
version of the sniffer going, we could use the same techniques for other
technologies, allowing for developers to use a common (and hopefully
familiar) way of doing things. Also with this many people there are an
unlimited amount of things that could be added into it (For example
automatically display an appropriate image based on the color depth of the
browser).

So there you go, there's my thoughts,
Barranger

Hmmmm.....I hope it is what it wants to be! Atleast there is a living
breathing awareness from the mothership in regards to these concerns . . . .
right?
My feeling is that MM has the resources to put something like this together
properly, and I am sure they will. Late April/Early May - Damn, why do
corporate things take so long?
My feeling also is that we out here in the fields are just as keen to
potential problems and hazards that may otherwise be inadvertantly
overlooked by the great MM.
The efforts at the compatibility list will continue to keep a focus, not to
nag, but to be sure that our sites are viewable across the board. A QA sort
of. And I bet we'll notice these efforts get considered in this new release.
With the web the way it is, we know it's pain in the unowut to cross
platform ANYTHING these days. And I would be very surprised to hear MM claim
that this is an endall/fixall. That could never be. MS and AOL are dictating
the rules for many viewers and in some cases they are heading in opposite
directions.
An Ideal Flash Deployment Kit is a living, breathing, evolving, updated,
keen to new problems, fast acting, get down to business, no bs, answer the
needs of developers, viewers, johnny on the spot.
know what I mean?
Late April/Early May - why does it have to be a kit? Why can't these
resources be divulged as they are developed? Just asking - trying not to nag
. . .
I would feel much more confident about this if it was named something like:

<Flash Deployment Alert and Resource Center>

Not a downloaded kit. More of a Web portal with a really cool control panel
and graphs with lots of red and green lights run by highly paid scientists
with full-time assistants headed by Dr. Barranger Ridly to monitor the net -
and with spies flying helicopters over MS and AOLN finding out what's coming
around the corner so they can immediately alert the developers with fixes
and patches to make it all better again. Of course I'm kinda kidding, but
that is the kind of confidence I would like.
A kit?
This is really to be viewed as constructive - I applaud MM spending
resources on this.
