One solution which I know works, but might change any actionscripts you have
is to place the button inside a movieclip. Then, by setting the movieclip's
visibility, you can hide and show the button.

Alternatively, you could have each state of the button (up, down, over) be
movieclips themselves with two frames each. One being visible the second
beind empty. Then, by doing the same to the HIT area you could tell target
to step from frame 1 to frame 2 on all four movieclips or simply the up and
hit frames and the button will disappear. This second alternative requires a
little more coding, but at least your not changing the buttons relative
layer position from the main timeline.
