Hi Brian-
Yes, make the graphic a 'button'.
The hit state only defines the area that will activate the button - afaik.
To cause it to do something when clicked, you have to 'Modify'>'Instance'
and define an action. So by not assigning an action, nothing will happen
when clicked.
On the 'Over' state, creating a movie clip there is a lot of fun! You can
basically do anything by putting a movie clip in the 'Over' state of a
button.
It's actually quite easy, once you start playing around with it :)

>(If) I have a graphic that I want to do something visually with when I run
the mouse over it, but not have it do anything when it's clicked - as in a
button - I'm assuming that I have to create it as I would if I was creating
a button... it's just that on the Hit state I don't tell Flash to do
anything with the click... is this correct? What exactly will I have to do
(or NOT do, as the case may be) here?
