Hey Poet,
In flash3 there are three basic kinds of symbols - graphics,
buttons, and movie clips. It is this last one that David was refering to
in his post. A movie clip has its own time-line outside of the regular
movie so it animates without help.
Basically, create your symbol as a movie clip, animate it the way
you normally would in a regular timeline and place it in your movie. You
don't even have to add anything else to your movie since your movie clip
will continue to animate even if the main movie hits its last frame.
Remember, though, that you can only see your animated movie clips
working when you export the movie or view it in "test" mode.
