OK, lets look at the argument from another angle.
You have a highly successful brand that you have worked hard at exposing
through traditional media, but decide against having any kind of web
presence because it 'serves no purpose' or you 'lack a suitable application'
So - you have *no* web page, (after all, it's a waste of money) but someone
is curious enough about your brand to enter the word in a search engine - I
will leave the top ten results of that search to your terrified imaginations
(see: "How to deal with rogue websites").
I would argue that, website or not, you would at least have to purchase the
domain name to secure it. What do you want people to see when they enter
www.yourbrand.com?
"We can't think of anything constructive"?
"We can't be bothered"?
"A website is not economically viable at this stage"?
The words 'necessary evil' come to mind.
Besides, how many major brands have merchandise they would like to flog?
Just look at the range of merchandise available at www.austinpowers.com and
you will see quite a few examples of movie merchandise that would never be
possible on a traditional production/distribution model.
Even if your website just flogs T-Shirts with your goddamn name on it, I say
go for it - as you have little choice in the matter anyway.
