There seems to be some assumption that Telewest et al are falling down in
their historic role of bringing good things to humanity generally and you
personally. Marketing has failed because they haven't correctly calculated
the number of minimum wage slaves required to stuff envelopes with CDs. Have
you considered the possibility that these companies are offering services
that they can't support and the only way of choking off demand is by
failing? It's not properly a marketing decision but I know of at least one
major player that is rationing access by cutting back on their CD-sized
stationery procurement program. Clearly there are lots of practised
techniques for failure - dumb arse incompetence being a favourite, but you
are wrong to think that this isn't done without full knowledge at some
levels.
