On the question of good ways and bad ways for advertising, the simple
advice would be keep it simple and effective if you are going for
banners. If not, print up leaflets/flyers and give them out to people.
Get the name about. If you have an existing retail outlet, put the Web
address on everything, just get the name out!
With e-commerce sites you live or die by the folks who visit and order,
if they don't know you are out there, you won't get the business.
Give people a good reason why they should go to your Web site and not
the high-street. The reason does not need to be always a discount ,but
couldf be added value? Look at what you are doing onlnie and ask
yourself how can I improve the experience for the shopper. Put yourself
in the shoes of the online shopper.
You probably want loyalty from the cusotmer, so look at some loyalty
type programme. Look at linking up with other sites that may be able to
carry some traffic for you. But don't expect them to place a link for
free! Offer them some type of "affilaite" programe where they get a cut
of the action. Give them an incentive to promote your site.
Recently I wanted to buy a fridge freezer, in the end I went to John
Lewis not because they were the cheapest (as it turns out they offer a
price match policy) but because they offer a free two year warranty and
to extend it to five years cost 20. But I went to them because of
reputation for offering good service.
What is needed with sites like yours is to build up a reputation for
quality service that way people will get ot know you and come to you.
The market is tough and going to get tougher over the coming months, but
there is still scope for a small player to take on the big boys, but the
only way they can do that is to make the online experience as pleasant
as possible.
